Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar has urged security agencies to crackdown on terror cells that could be operating in the coastal region.

Omar said the terror cells could be behind the radicalisation of young people in the region.

Speaking on Tuesday, the senator said young people are becoming vulnerable to terror groups, adding that the government needs to act urgently to save the situation.

The senator who was speaking in relation to Sunday's foiled terror attack at the Central Police Station in Mombasa, urged security agencies not to relent in the fight against terrorism.

“Security agencies must work around the clock and get rid of terror cells that might still be in existence within Mombasa and other parts of the country, so that our young people can be prevented from joining these groups,” he said.

He also asked the government to create job opportunities for youth, noting that most of them engage in terror activities due to lack of jobs.

Three terror suspects were on Sunday killed by police after they attempted to launch an attack at the Mombasa Central Police Station.

The three were shot dead by police after they stabbed a police officer at the reporting desk.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing with several suspects having been arrested and arraigned in court.
