Mombasa Wiper governor aspirant Hassan Omar now wants the police post at Piggiot Place in Old Town demolished.

Senator Omar said the police post was a waste of taxpayers' money, because one year after its establishment, no police officer has been posted to the area, and besides, it's barely 500 metres from the Central Police station.

“How can you construct a police post 500 metres from a police station? Police posts are always constructed or put up in areas that have no presence of security personnel,” said Omar on Sunday as quoted by The Star.

The police post was constructed in 2016 to tame the rising wave of insecurity in the region. It was funded by Mvita Constituency Development Fund (CDF) office whose patron is MP Abdulswamad Nassir.

He said the National Museums of Kenya was against the setting up of the police post, and that he also engaged Coast regional coordinator Nelson Marwa and Abdulswamad against taking away public land.

“I do not know why this construction was allowed to continue. Inshallah, Abdulswamad, the same way he constructed this building, he should also do the same to demolish it so that people can have a place to converge,” the Senator said.

“I told Marwa, Abdulswamad and the National Museums of Kenya that they should not take away this land from the people of Old Town in the name of fighting insecurity. It is now urgent that we should get back this Piggiot Place land,” he added.

The Wiper secretary general made the remarks when he awarded winners of the Quran Recitation competition for children under 15 years.

On his part, Old Town MCA aspirant Athman Abdhalla who organised the ceremony said he's priority if he wins the August polls will be security.

“I will work to ensure we continue with these kind of activities so as to continue fighting crime. We shall put up security gates around this area to curb crime,” Abdhala said.
