Law enforcement agencies should arrest and prosecute politicians playing music without paying the artists’ royalties, Mombasa senator Hassan Omar Sarai has said.
The senator, who is contesting for governorship on Wiper ticket, said that the relevant agencies need to come up with measures to ensure that different politicians pay royalties to the Performance Rights Society of Kenya (PRISK) in a bid to support Kenyans.
Under the law, governors, senators and Woman rep are expected to pay Sh400,000, Sh150,000 and respectively Sh100,000.
MPs and MCAs expected to pay Sh50,000 and sh12,500 respectively.
The senator, a former commissioner of Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNHCR) was speaking in Mombasa during presentation of cheque to PRSK.
The remarks of the lawmaker come at a time when some musicians have been lamenting about politicians using their music during campaigns as they languish in abject poverty.
The aspirant said that his government will ensure that the young talented youths from different parts of Mombasa reap where they sow, adding that he will work closely with them to better their lives.
“We will ensure as the county government we create a sector to identify talents and nurture young people in Mombasa," he said.
He further asked all Wiper lawmakers to make payments to the PRISK as soon as possible.
