Public sector officers have been cautioned against using their offices or public monies for political campaigns.
Acting Chairperson of the Commission on Administrative Justice Regina Mwatha says that such actions are against the laws and that appointed public officers should refrain from participating in the activities of political parties.
The alleged involvement of government officials in political campaigns has caught the attention of the Ombudsman and is now warning of dire consequences
In a circular, Mwatha says the misuse of public resources by public officers’ amounts to breaking of national values and principles of governances under article 10, the principals of leadership under Chapter Six and the Principles of Public Finance under Article 201 of the Constitution.
According to her, the penalty for such offences is removal from office and subsequent disqualification from holding any other state office in accordance with the law.
Mwatha reiterated that the commission will work with other bodies including the IEBC, the office of the DPP, Public Service Commission and the EACC to ensure compliance of the law.
Public officials who want to participate in politics or support any political party are advised to resign from their positions with immediate effect.
