The Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) national executive council has approved Wycliffe Omucheyi as the acting national chairman with immediate effect. Omucheyi will hold the position until election is held to replace the outgoing national chairman Mudzo Nzili.
The council has also resolved to retain Wilson Sossion as the national secretary general amid calls for his resignation owing to his political affiliation with Orange Democratic Movement party which nominated him as a Member of Parliament after the August 8 General Election.
The new developments according to Sossion, will see Nzili proceed on compulsory leave awaiting his retirement next year. The resolution was made during a special national executive council meeting held at Severin Sea Lodge in Mombasa.
“We have resolved to replace Nzili, we will not conduct any election since their names will still remain in the Registrar of Trade Unions until the next election in June,” said Sossion. However, he assured that both Nzili and Samson Kaguma will attend the 6th Annual delegates congress slated for December 13-25 in Mombasa where they will deliver their retirement speeches.
Sossion said the union will amend its constitution especially on clauses that touch on leadership transition before June next year. “Nzili’s concerns have properly been addressed by the council and since the union respects its internal democracy, the two will proceed with their leave pending their retirement. The six months leave is sustained for good reasons,” he said.
