Interior security cabinet secretary dr. Fred Matiangi’ has said that lawyer Miguna Miguna is free to return to Kenya any time he wishes.
Defending the government on the NRM’s self-pronounced “general’s” narrative, Matiangi’ said that Miguna should apply for a regularized citizenship according to the constitution.
This comes two days after the Parliamentary Committee on Security summoned the Interior Security Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiangi’, Permanent Secretary Immigration Gordon Kihalangwa, Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinet, and Principal Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dr Karanja Kibicho.
Speaking on Monday when he appeared before the security committee, Matiangi’ said the government had nothing to do with Miguna’s passport other than having the immigration department stamp it.
“What happened to Miguna is nothing out of the ordinary. He was only asked to surrender his passport to the immigration authorities to have it stamped but he refused,” said Matiangi’.
Matiangi’ said that Miguna just like other 3,000 Kenyans who earlier changed their citizenships to foreign countries, has to apply for regularization of his Kenyan citizenship in accordance with the Kenyan citizenship and immigration Act 2011.
“There are three thousand Kenyans who have changed their citizenship to many nations across the globe. They just fill forms to have their Kenyan citizenship regularized. Miguna was supposed to do so in accordance to the requirements of the constitution,” Matiangi’ stated.
When asked whether Miguna was dragged and harassed by Police, Matiangi’ backed what the Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet saying that Miguna was not arrested, he was not aware if he was dragged since he was on the airside of the airport.
The constitution of Kenya on Immigration and citizenship has it that a Kenyan who had renounced his citizenship must reapply for its regularization once he/she intends to return to Kenya as a Kenyan citizen.
