One person died on Wednesday in Kilifi after a lorry veered of the road and plunged into a river at Mbogolo Bridge.
According to witnesses, the driver was speeding along the Mombasa-Malindi highway before losing control of the vehicle as he approached the bridge which was damaged by floods a few days ago, The Star reports.
“The lorry was at a high speed ... It was raining and it veered off and slipped into the river,” said Mwamuye Mngoma, a witness.
Mngoma said two men were rescued by onlookers but efforts to save the third passenger proved futile as he was swept away by the heavy current.
“He appeared for a few seconds and we saw him being swept away at a very high speed and we could do nothing because he was far away and we were still struggling with the two,” he added, as quoted by the local daily.
