One person died on Friday after a vehicle he was traveling in caught fire in Mamboleo estate in Kisumu.
The car rolled several times before catching fire as it cruised along the Kisumu - Kibos road.
The driver of the vehicle was burnt to death while two other occupants managed to escape before police got to the scene.
One of the police officers in pursuit of the suspects confirmed the vehicle was transporting bhang and beer packed in sachets bearing Uganda Revenue Authority stamps.
The damaged car was toed to Kondele Police station whereas the body of the driver was taken to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary.
According to an eye witness, the car lost control and rolled while being chased by a police land cruiser.
Titus Ochieng said police started pursuing the vehicle at Manyatta slums after a tip off that it was transporting bhang.
"Police tried to stop it but the driver defied and sped off," he said.
