The deceased was a pedestrian who was hit by overspeeding probox trying to overtake a saloon car both heading to Mwingi.

Confirming the incident, Yatta OCPD Edward Kipsang said that accidents have become common at that place specifically being caused by overspeeding probox vehicles transporting miraa.

He said that the probox was moving at a very high speed before it caused the accident.

"The probox has lost control as it tried to overtake a saloon car then has ended up hitting a pedestrian who has died on the spot and landed on bodaboda operator injuring him. It has collided with 42 seater bus parked alongside the road, where the driver of the probox has sustained injuries and his two colleagues who were on board," said Kipsang.

The deceased was taken to Matuu median hospital mortuary and the injured were rushed to Matuu level four hospital.

According to residents, countless deaths have been witnessed at that place being very busy market along the road for hawkers.

They said that they are tired of presenting grievances to area leaders for the right thing to be done to reduce the accidents and therefore threatened to hold demonstrations and close the busy highway.

"For so many years we have been calling upon the area leaders to present our grievances to county government or rather take action and save us from deaths here Sophia caused by reckless driving but no one has ever listened to us. Just three days behind a man was run over by overspeeding probox as he tried to cross the road. We need bumps to be put in place if not so holding demonstrations and closing the road is not a big deal," said a furious resident who refused to disclose his name.
