One person died on the spot while five others sustained serious injuries on Monday when a Kilgoris bound car hit a stationary track canter that was loaded with murram near Nyangusu Township.
The deceased body, who was the driver of the car, was taken to Nyamache District Hospital Mortuary while the casualties were rushed to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital.
According to eye witnesses, the car driver, who was allegedly driving at a high speed, lost control before veering off the road and subsequently hitting a stationary lorry.
“The driver of the car was moving at a high speed. I believe that he may have been under the influence of something or he was trying to run away for somebody. He lost control and almost hit a pedestrian before hitting the lorry,” claimed John Ombasa, the area resident.
The witness also said that the car almost fell into a bridge. Three people who were also in the same car were rescued plus two from the lorry.
According to another eye witness, Evans Okundi the lorry was also parked at a dangerous place near a bridge, contrary to road safety rules.
“As much as we blame the car driver, it is also in order to question owners of the lorry since it was parked at a dangerous place,” said Okundi.
Ogembo OCPD John Mwangi confirmed the incident and urged drivers to be extra cautious when driving along the busy Kisii-Kilgoris Highway
