Reports indicate that the bus driver died on the spot, while the lorry driver sustained chest injuries.

According to the police, the accident occurred as the bus driver tried to overtake a vehicle in front of him.

“As a result, an unknown number of passengers aboard the bus were injured and rushed to various hospitals within Kisumu County for treatment,”  Kericho Police Commander James  Mugera was quoted by Standard.

Witnesses of the accident, however, noted that destruction by lorries packed along the road side was to blame for the head on collision.

“There were about four lorries which were parked at the shoulder of the road awaiting to enter the company, they are to blame for the accident as they caused an obstruction and the bus driver could not clearly see the road ahead,” one of the witnesses told Standard.

The injured passengers were rushed to Kisumu for treatment, while the body of the deceased was taken to Kericho hospital morgue.

The accident caused a major traffic snarl up in Kisumu and its environs.
