One Mount Kenya University student has been confirmed dead while over 18 others are nursing injuries at Thika level five hospital after the Friday morning chaos where anti-riot police officers attacked them in an attempt to contain the irate protesting students.
The students were injured while running for their safety when the police, in an attempt to calm them, fired tear gas at them and it is alleged that one of the officers fired a live bullet which hit one of the students at the neck, sending him to a comma in the hospital bed only to be confirmed dead by the doctors on Saturday.
The varsity students were rioting after one student was murdered on Thursday night in Kiganjo area of Thika sub-county while heading home.
Following the incident, Mount Kenya University administration, led by the Vice Chancellor Stanley Waudo faulted police officers and security men in the area, saying that they are mandated to secure everyone, including students residing in any part of Thika.
Waudo said that he would not relent until the police officer who ended the life of the student is held accountable for the killing.
He said that the area has been hit by the insecurity challenge and they have been urging the police to secure the students yet nothing has ever been done.
Waudo, who was speaking in his office, said that the students who were injured would be taken care of by the institution as they wait for the police boss to point out the officer who killed the deceased.
