A middle-aged woman was yesterday killed and others escaped with injuries when a matatu they were travelling in collided head-on with a Toyota pickup at Mangu-Flyover road at Kamwangi in Gatundu North.
According to those who witnessed the early evening accident, the driver of the Mangu-bound matatu belonging to 2NK Sacco lost control and hit the other vehicle.
“The driver of this matatu was speeding as he hit the bend. Unaware of the other vehicle that was heading to the same direction, he hit it from the back, resulting to the death of one of the occupants in the matatu. We have tried to rescue the others who were injured,” Dickson Kiragu, a witness, said.
Occupants of the other vehicle, which was heading to Flyover for Nakuru, escaped with minor injuries as rescue operations by the members of public managed to save the lives of those who were still stuck in the matatu.
Gatundu North OCPD John Kipiengo cautioned motorists against reckless driving, especially along that road where many lives have been lost.
“We have lost many lives especially during rainy seasons. The roads are foggy and slippery. Caution should be exercised to avert loss of lives. Drivers should know that there are other road users,” Kipiengo warned.
The injured were rushed to Gatundu level four hospital where they are receiving treatment while others were treated and discharged.
