A PSV Matatu rammed into a saloon car along General Kago road Killing one and injuring six passengers on board.
According to the police source, the PSV was over-speeding when they bumped on a salon car whose driver was being accused of driving under the influence of alcohol.
Driver of the saloon car is reported to have lost control of the car before crushing on the other speeding matatu leaving one person dead on the spot while other six sustained injuries Thursday morning.
In an interview with Samuel Mungai, a passenger who was on board, told the press that the driver of the matatu was recklessly over-speeding before they got involved in that fatal accident.
“We boarded the matatu from Nairobi at 5:00am to come to Thika and just a few minutes to reach our destination, we heard a loud bang only to realize that the matatu we were in got involved in accident with a saloon car. By then, most of us were sleeping in the vehicle,” said Mungai.
Police at the scene told the press that the driver of the saloon car suffered a heavy blow on his chest and head that might have resulted to his death.
The police also confirmed that six passengers were severely injured while 5 others had minor injuries on different parts of the bodies.
Confirming the incident, Thika West OCPD Shadrack Maithya said that investigations are underway to determine the cause of accident and warned the Matatu drivers not to over-speed and be keen on road.
“We warn those drivers who drink and drive and those who over-speed leading to unnecessary accidents on roads,” said Maithya adding that traffic police officers have put measures to curb over-speeding vehicles citing that plans to introduce speed-guns to the officers to tame reckless drivers will very soon be implemented.
The body of the deceased was taken to General Kago Morgue and the injured passengers were taken to Thika level 5 hospital.
