Nominated Senator Janet Ong’era has warned her Orange Democratic Party against issuance of direct tickets to incumbent leaders during 2017 elections.
Ong’era, who recently denied reports linking her to a defection to Jubilee Alliance party believe the habit could cost the party in getting required numbers in all elective positions.
In an exclusive interview with the reporter on Sunday, Ong’era backed transparent nominations which she said could give popular candidates a chance to be elected.
“I want to urge the ODM party especially the NEC to ensure that the party abolishes the previous primitive act of issuing party nomination certificates based on who is what to the party. We must be very straight forward this time round,” she said.
“The party needs majority in all elective seats so that we can be save in parliament or in county assemblies. Popular candidates must be given tickets if we have to achieve that. It’s the only way we can protect our presidential candidate in 2017 by having numbers in the house,” she said.
She challenged party’s electoral body to issue structured nomination dates that will be done in every county to avoid commotion.
“No one wants chaos. Direct tickets cannot be issued anymore and whoever wants a ticket must join nominations. The party’s electoral body should plan early so that our candidates are known early and we concentrate on presidential elections. The issue of direct ticket is a thing of the past,” she said.
