Nominated Senator on ODM ticket, Elizabeth Ongoro reiterated Wiper Party Patron Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka’s sentiments that leaders of the National Super Alliance (NASA) will call for a referendum in order to amend the current constitution to accommodate other principals if they win the August general polls.
In an exclusive interview on Citizen Television’s Jeff Koinange Live on Wednesday, Kalonzo said that the opposition has plans to amend the 2010 constitution to create posts for co-principals who will not be chosen as Presidential candidate and running mate.
“We will go to the people of this country and try to remind them that a Constitution is not a static document. It has to respond to the political environment as well as aspirations of the people. We will create the Office of the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister,” Kalonzo said as quoted by the local daily.
According to Ongoro, the proposal to amend the constitution will not only motivate other leaders in the alliance but also unite them as they seek to dethrone President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto during the forthcoming General polls.
“We fully support Kalonzo’s statement. That is the official position of NASA. And it is a very good and credible position. The whole idea is when you go into a fight together, whatever the outcome, everybody should be a partaker. And that is what he is putting on the table – to make everyone comfortable; that if you don’t get this one, you can still get that one. We are fully behind that statement as NASA,” said Ms Ongoro.
The idea of amending the constitution has continued to attract mixed reactions from different leaders aligned to Jubilee with most of them accusing NASA principals of being driven by selfish interests to rise to power.
