Lack of sanitary towels for school going girls in Kisii County poses a serious challange to girl child education.
Most girls especially those who hail from poor background are forced to skip school when having their monthly period.
This has made the area governor, James Ongwae, to appeal for help from development partners.
Ongwae urged non governmental organaisation to partner with his government to initiate a programme of distributing free sanitary towels to enhance girls retention and completion of their education.
Speaking at the County Committee room after receiving a delegation of development partners led by the Israel Ambassador to Kenya, Shalom Cohen, who paid him a courtesy call, the governor observed that the towels will adequately prepare school girls for the biological challenges.
"The sanitary towels to be distributed to the school girls will ensure they continue attending their classes without interruption during their monthly menstrual cycles while in schools," observed Ongwae.
The Governor's appeal comes amid challenges of absenteeism among school girls, especially those from poor families who more often than not skip classes during their monthly menstrual cycles due to lack of reliable and comfortable sanitary towels.
