Kisii Governor James Ongwae on Thursday appeared before the Senate Standing Committee on Land, Environment and Natural Resources chaired by Senator Paul Mwangi to shed more light on the proposed construction of a Sugar Complex in South Mugirango.
Ongwae petitioned the Senate to approve the delineation of the boundaries of Nyangweta Forest to allow the investor establish a sugar factory.
Aware of the need to ensure forest conservation in the County, he revealed they had had identified 13 forests and offered them to the Kenya Forest Service for management.
Following his presentation, the Committee invited technical officers from the Ministries of Environment and Agriculture in theNational Government for interrogation before visiting Nyangweta Forest.
"The factory will create over 3,000 direct and indirect jobs and support development of social amenities like schools, roads, hospitals and a fire station," he said.
"Already, Nema has given a license and the investor has registered Kisii Renewable Energy and Sugar Factory Limited that will establish the factory," he added.
Once complete, the governor said the factory will process 5,000 tonnes of cane per day and produce 10 megawatts of power and ethanol.
