Speaking during the official launch of the county flag at Gusii Stadium on Monday, governor Ongwae said the flag is a symbol of unity among the Abagusii community, further asking the Kisii residents and leaders to join hands and work for the prosperity of the county.

He noted that the colours and features captured in the flag represent what the Omogusii practices in the cultural context.

The county boss also launched an emblem with a seal, and promised that the county court of arms would be unveiled once completed.

“We are happy for being the first county to have a county flag that connotes the Omogusii culture. The flag binds us as one indivisible community and therefore, I call upon other leaders and residents to embrace unity and work with the county government so that we can develop our county further,” added Governor Ongwae.

The governor said the three colours in the flag meant what the county practices and believes in, and reminded that his government is inclusive to all including other communities living in the county.

“My government is inclusive since in our flag has no discrimination to anybody. The seven stars stands for six clans in the county and one star is for the non-residents who live in the county,” he said.

“The bananas stand for agricultural activity among the Abagusii community, while the soapstone shows the creative art of the Kisii people. On the other hand, the hills are for the county topography where tea flourishes, while the round ring stands for inclusivity,” explained Ongwae.

He promised to work with the National Government in the fight against insecurity in the country, further asking Kisii residents to know their neighbours well as one of the measures in the fight against the vice.

Others who were present during the event include Deputy Governor Joash Maangi, MPs Richard Onyonka, and Zebedeo Opore among others.
