Kisii county government has paid Sh30 million for the construction of Sombogo tea factory in a bid to boost farmers earnings, tea production, and job creation.
According to Kisii county Governor James Ongwae, the county government has partnered with Kenya Tea Development Agency ( KTDA) and the factory will be affiliated to Tombe tea factory in the sector.
Addressing residents on Wednesday in Kitutu Chache North constituency where the factory will be constructed, Ongwae urged the farmers to plant more tea to feed the factory, adding it will create more than 200 jobs for youths in the area.
He said the Environmental Impact Assessment ( EIA), designs, drawings and tender documents have been approved by stakeholders, adding the construction will start before the end of the year.
Governor Ongwae noted the factory and the agency have passed irrevocable resolutions to construct the factory.
He also challenged residents to invest in real estates to accommodate the contractors and workers at the factory.
“ I urge investors to invest in good hotels which offer quality food and services. That will create more jobs and enhance incomes for locals and standard of living,” noted Ongwae.
