Kisii Governor James Ongwae is still undecided about his possible running mate in 2017 polls, a source close to the office of the governor has revealed.
Ongwae has since fallen out with his Deputy Joash Maangi who recently indicated his intention to challenge him in the 2017 polls.
According to the source, Ongwae is comfortable with nominated Senator Janet Ong’era but the situation has since been complicated by Ong’era marriage in Luo Nyanza and Senator Chris Obure’s influence in regional politics.
“It’s a complicated situation for him and has always given him a headache. He would have been comfortable with Ong’era but the fact that she is reportedly married in Luo Nyanza," said the source.
"It may not be ideal given our culture of voting for people living within the county,” said the source who is not authorised to speak on behalf of the governor.
“Also, even if we ignore Ong’era marriage issues, still if Obure goes for gubernatorial seat and Ongwae picks Ong’era as running mate, it will not still work because she hails from Obure’s backyard and that will bring a regional balance disorder,” the source added.
The source also revealed that the governor is in advanced talks with South Mugirango MP Manson Nyamweya to strike a deal that will see him appointed as running mate.
“It hasn’t been easy for him and currently there is a lot of lobbying going on. The Governor is keen to ensure he picks an ideal running mate and as for now, Ong’era and Manson stand a good chance,” added the source.
Efforts to get information from Ongwae’s trusted lieutenant and Majority Whip Henry Moracha were futile since he could neither respond to calls nor texts.
