At least 30 more health facilities are set to be opened in Kisii County to help improve health provision in sector, Kisii Governor James Ongwae has said.
Many of them were constructed by the help of Constituency Development Funds but have dysfunctional for a number of years.
Ongwae said the inauguration of the facilities marks a milestone in the efforts to address problems afflicting health care provision in the devolved unit.
“Despite the ongoing strike by doctors we want to ensure there is proper provision of service going on at our hospitals and that people proper health care services,” he said.
He was speaking on Tuesday when he flagged off a Sh 40 million worth of drug consignment to health facilities in the County.
At least 100 dispensaries across nine sub-counties in the region will benefit from the drugs.
Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital will consume the bulk of the drugs supplied by the National drug agency, Kemsa.
The County has been experiencing acute drug shortage making many patients dig deeper into their pockets to buy drugs at exorbitant prices from private drug stores.
The Kisii County chief said his administration has taken measures, among them computerization of systems, to stem the spate of drug theft in hospitals in the region
“Drug theft is often a common problem that happens all over but with computerization we hope to tone it down considerably,” he told reporters.
