Kisii County Governor James Ongwae has warned leaders and parents who accused his government saying it was not offering full scholarships to students in public universities but was lying to the public.
Speaking on Tuesday while signing the bursary bill at Kisii county assembly, Ongwae said that the bursary initiative should not be politicised but used to develop the community.
He said that county bursary was aimed at improving education standards which had been wanting in the region due to lack of school fees terming poverty as the major drawback in the education sector.
He stated that through the bursary, many students were able to continue with their studies which included students who joined national schools and universities under the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS).
The county boss blamed the leaders for misleading the public that university students were benefiting from Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) yet not all students benefited from such loans.
“It must be understood that not all students who apply for HELB succeed because there is no guarantee that all students will be awarded the loans,” he said.
He said that there was a need for all leaders to support the initiative because its aim was to improve the low education standards and also to have their own professionals who would reduce the deficit of personnel which was being experienced in the County government.
