Kisii governor James Ongwae has said the establishment of a cancer center at the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital will cut costs for patients in the county.

Governor Ongwae said the cancer centre will serve the region at an affordable cost so that people can get treated in the hospital without necessarily going abroad.

“We are committed to ensuring that specialised services like cancer treatment and renal healthcare are brought closer to the people so that patients don’t have to seek the services abroad.

This is why we have upgraded the hospital into a teaching and referral facility, installed modern diagnostic equipment including CT scan and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and digital x-ray machines. We have also secured funds for the establishment of a cancer centre at the referral hospital,” said Ongwae.

Ongwae was speaking on Friday at Kenyenya area during a fundraising for former Bomachoge Member of Parliament, Zephaniah Nyang'wara who is set to undergo a kidney transplant in India.

During the fundraiser, a total of Sh1.2 million was raised in the function that took place at Kenyenya sports ground. Ongwae who was the chief guest gave a personal donation of Sh200,000.

Abamachoge in diaspora under the leadership of Job Nyangenya also sent a contribution of more than Sh200,000.

Kisii County legislators (MPs and Senators) had collected a total of Sh1 million during a past fundraiser in Nairobi.

Nyang’wara served as Bomachoge MP in 1997-2002 before losing his seat to Joel Onyancha. During his term, he served as a member of the Parliamentary Accounts Committee and Parliamentary Investment Committee.
