Onion Farmers in Kapsaret, Uasin Gishu county have been left lamenting after the ongoing rains led to the rotting of their onions.
According to agricultural specialists, onions don't require much water especially while at maturity stage for them to grow healthy and strong.
Joseph Kiptanui, a Farmer in and member of the Eldoret farmers Facebook Page expressed his agony and distress on Monday after losing almost one acre of planted onions ready to be harvested by June.
According to him, the rains have gone beyond onion water limit leading to a big loss in terms of money and time as well.
"We thank God for the rains, but my land is all in a mess after losing almost a whole acre of onions due to increased water underground. When is the best time to plant again?" he asked.
Several people took to the platform to answer his biggest worry.
"You can plant any time but always consider the weatherman predictions reports," Ann Cherot posted.
"Nobody knew about the wright of these rains but we hope for the best, it was a big loss take heart brother," added Sam Mbae.
Another Facebook user by the name Christopher said onions can best be planted in the month of October so as to harvest in January and February though one will need to water them.
"Take advantage of the short rains so as to harvest early in the next year. Never the less you will at times need to water the crops to avoid drying," he posted.
The rains have left a negative impact in many áreas including floods being experienced in different places of the country.
