With a total of 22, 245 schools having been connected to electricity, Energy Cabinet Secretary Charles Keter says remaining schools to be attended to before 2017.
It has also emerged that only 33 schools in the expansive Garissa County are connected to the national power grid.
While assuring that the Jubilee electrification project is on course, CS Keter says work is ongoing in 312 schools with additional 586 other schools awaiting project commissioning.
“Our target is to reach to 23, 411 schools and we are now left with 1,166 schools across the country,” said Keter.
The Energy CS further added that a total of 18, 074 schools have been connected to electricity by grid extensions, while 4,171 other have been connected to solar power. He adds that the power connections will greatly transform the sector.
“These connections will largely boost education in our schools and expose the students to modern technology. It will open up economic activities as parents will be able to engage more in income-generating businesses. This will eventually lead to a 24-hour economy,” said the Cabinet Secretary.
