Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has told Parliament that only six out of the 47 counties in the country have adequate primary school teachers.
In a report he presented to Parliament, he noted that the country is facing a shortage of 87,000 teachers with 39,913 of them being primary school teachers while 47,576 are secondary school instructors.
The most damning part of the report however, was how the available teachers are distributed across the country with only six counties having enough primary school teachers.
According to the report, only Kiambu, Murang'a, Kirinyaga and Nyeri have enough primary school teachers.
Others are Nyamira and Kisii.
Matiang'i emphasized on the need to hire more teachers to address the shortage and as per the report, the six counties have a total of 2,574 schools with a total of 31,366 teachers in primary schools.
Kitui county is the most hit with a shortage of 2,562 teachers in 1,221 primary schools in the county.
The CS tabled the report following a request from Bomet Central MP Ronald Tonui to know the official number of additional teachers the government needs to hire in an effort to bridge the deficit.
