Police have dismissed the Opposition and human rights activists stance on protest killings and said that only recorded six deaths have been recorded so far.

According to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), 24 people have died across the country due to police brutality since August 8.

KNCHR chair Kagwiria Mbogori revealed on Saturday that the highest number of casualties were in Nairobi where 17 deaths occurred mainly after the declaration presidential election results on Friday.

NASA principals on their part put the death toll at 100.

But a Sunday statement sent to newsrooms by IG Joseph Boinnet said these are untrue allegations.

"These allegations are unfounded and have no basis in fact and are clearly aimed at escalating tensions in the Country," said spokesman George Kinoti.

He said they have recorded only six deaths "in which criminals armed and acting with deadly intent attacked Police officers attempting to effect arrest."

According to the Star, Kinoti said they have recorded two deaths in Ruaraka after criminals were shot dead breaking into a supermarket at Kasabuni.

"When challenged to surrender, they attacked the law enforcement officers with machetes with an intent to harm them," he said.

"The fourth and fifth criminals were fatally neutralised after a gang of six broke into a shop in Kariobangi, Nairobi," he said.

He added that as police pursued them, they fired at the officers who retaliated by firing back in defense.

Kinoti said the sixth death occurred in Kisumu after a criminal was shot following a large riot along Kago-Kiboswa road.

"The Police Officers attempting to effect arrest were also attacked," he said.
