Kapkures Member of county Assembly Jacob Langat has expressed fears that the onset of the rains in the area will force majority of the students in the area to quit school due to lack of bridges.
Langat cited that they did not have a bridge for the pupils to cross the Lamudiarc River in the area forcing children to walk for more than four kilometers to cross the river in an alternative bridge.
“Majority of the pupils in Kigonor in Nakuru West opt to stop going to school once the rainy season start as they intend to avoid the long walk,” said Langat.
“Some of the small ones also fear being carried away by the water. The only bridge that was there was a fallen piece of tree that is now rotting posing a huge risk for the children,” he added
Joseph Kiptoo, a resident, now wants the government to build for them the bridges using the emergency funds set aside by the counties.
“We need to know that our children are safe when they go to school, otherwise exposing them to such risks is not healthy for them,” he added
Josephine Cheptoo lamented that majority of the parents would not allow their children to go to school for fear of having them swept away.
“I choose to remain with my children. I do not wish them death and having an education is not as important as having them alive,” she added.
