Nyamira County Commissioner Josephine Onunga has urged residents who did not complete their education to enrol for adult learning to acquire basic knowledge.
Speaking during the 51st International Adult Literacy Day celebrations at Orwaki adult and literacy community learning resource centre in Nyamusi Ward, the commissioner urged the county residents to embrace adult literacy as a form of eradicating poverty.
Onunga said that insecurity which has been experienced in the area would be a thing of the past if they took education seriously and engaged in development ideas which will see their living standards improve.
“Kenya is among the countries which are taking a slow pace in educating her people globally. According to a research done worldwide, Sub-Saharan Africa’s illiteracy level has increased by 37% where with over 775 million people still illiterate. We should do something to save the future generations,” urged Onunga.
Onunga further discouraged residents from brewing illicit liquor which she said the area was leading in.She asked the brewers to engage in other income-generating activities like forming development groups for agriculture. She reiterated that the war on illicit brews will not stop until it was eradicated.
She added, “The importance of literacy can be realised in promoting all aspects of development in the surrounding environment. This war against illiteracy must involve all stakeholders for us to realise change and development,” she concluded.
