Kakamega governor Wycliffe Oparanya is hopeful that Bukhungu Stadium will be the focus of the country and region after it is uplifted to international standards.
The stadium has been under renovation and was recently earmarked as one of the venues to host the CECAFA tournament if the ongoing rehabilitation and upgrading will end in time.
"In the past one week, you might have seen in the national media, the new look Bukhungu Stadium whose phase one construction will be finalised within the next one month, ready for hosting regional and international sports events," the governor said during in his Mashujaa Day speech.
"We were assured by the visiting delegation of top officials of the national and regional football authorities, FKF and CECAFA, that as soon as we meet the required technical standards by the continental body CAF, some matches in this year’s CECAFA tournament will be hosted at Bukhungu Stadium," he added.
He further said Bukhungu is poised to attract high spending football fans and tourists and will go ahead to create opportunities.
"Such games attract many high-spending visitors to the host counties and present rare opportunities for guaranteed limelight from live international, regional and national media coverage.
