Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) deputy party leader Wycliffe Oparanya appeared in a Butere court today over an assault case filed by his neighbour. The Kakamega governor is alleged to have committed the crime in 2008.

The ever calm Oparanya who is serving his second term as a governor was present during proceedings but was represented by his lawyer Dr. Ken Nyaundi.

The victim in question has four witnesses but only three were cross examined, two police officers and a clinical officer. They were crossed examined by Dr. Nyaundi and the prosecutor, Mr. Maina Gachoya.

According to court statements, the governor assaulted Mr. John Waka causing serious body harm on August 17, 2008. The incident took place at the county boss’ home.

The complainant says that Oparanya attacked him when he visited him to collect Sh16,600 out Sh30,300 that had not been paid after the ODM governor planted trees in Waka’s compoud.The fourth witness is the doctor who treated Waka and the prosecutor pleaded for adjournment so that he is able to present the fourth witness which was granted by Butere Senior Resident Magistrate Felix Makoyo.

"He is currently out of office and I request for a last adjournment," prayed Mr Gachoya as quoted by Nation.

The final hearing will be on January 29, 2018.
