Nandi County Senator Samson Cherargei has asked the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) to avail subsidised fertilizer to farmers for purchase.

This, the senator said, will enable farmers to prepare early enough for the planting season expected to begin later in March.

Speaking in Eldoret town on Sunday, Cherargei also asked NCPB to put in place measures that will ensure farmers easily access the subsidized fertilizers.

"Now that we have the subsidized fertilizers at our NCPB depots, I ask that farmers be allowed to purchase as early as this month to facilitate early preparations," he noted.

Adding that, "We need farmers to also easily access the commodity and mechanisms should be put in place to facilitate that."

The youthful Jubilee Senator further challenged NCPB officials to develop and implement stringent measures that will keep away cartels who always purchase the subsidized fertilizer and repackage before selling to farmers at a higher price.

"The government introduced subsidized fertilizer to benefit a common farmer and NCPB must ensure that purpose is served by closing the door on cartels," he added.
