When you see a governor launching a million projects in a day right now, know that he has done nothing for his county for the last four years and now he is trying to save face.
His actions can be likened to the proverbial last kicks of a dying horse. A serious governor who had the interests of his people first would not wait until the last year in office to start showing that he is indeed working. And that is what Machakos governor Alfred Mutua did.
In just one year in office, Mutua had achieved what many governors have not achieved after staying in office for four years. Is it any wonder that he was announced the best performing governor in Kenya?
Now let's forget about projects that are being launched the last minute. In any case, these last minute projects are geared towards re-election bids come 2017. Let us talk about projects that have been launched and are up and running.
Mutua's track record, allow me to use this phrase, can be seen even by a blind man. He has brought development in Machakos and we all can see this. Of course, he is not perfect, and he still has a long way to go as we have not seen, and we are likely not to see piped water in every household by next year.
Not every youth in Machakos is employed or engaged in constructive ventures. Not all roads are tarmacked. In fact, some have not even been paved. Our health centres still need to be equipped with more drugs and medical equipment.
But let us look at some of the things that Mutua has done. Mutua has renovated and upgraded many health centres. Machakos level five hospital, Athi River health centre and many others are boasting of not only a new outlook but adequate medical equipment and personnel.
He has also supplied ambulances to many health centres across the county. Mutua has renovated Kenyatta stadium. The stadium can now host local and international competitions. Even Kenya's Mashujaa day was held at the stadium.
Mutua has not forgotten artists. Remember he too is an artist. He launched Machahood and recently he waived film-shooting charges for actors and musicians. As part of Machakos county beautification program, Mutua has constructed Machakos peoples park as a recreational facility open for public. He has also decorated Machakos highways with trees and flower beds. In Machakos town, pavements for pedestrians have been constructed to ease traffic flow and reduce accidents.
Let me not elaborate on trade, infrastructure, bursaries for bright poor kids, orphans and vulnerable children. Let me not also elaborate on street lighting program and food security subsidy program. One thing is for sure though Chap chap or not, Mutua has brought development ( Maendeleo) in Machakos.
