It is very unfortunate that several Non-governmental organizations have been shut down and their accounts frozen following claims that they are funding terrorism activities. It is in my view that they would have otherwise sought other means to tame outrageous NGOs or organizations funding terrorism.
Unfortunately, majority of these organizations have been hope to many marginalized communities in Northern Kenya. Jubilee government is on course to subject citizens from these regions to difficult life, since basic facilities will not be within their reach. You all agree with me that majority of Kenyan problems are best solved amicably by the same NGOs that are now being seen as archenemies to Kenyan government.
Furthermore, my great worry is the fact that the majority of these NGOs are of European origin, raising questions. Is this a message that jubilee administration is sending to western countries that they are no more needed? The government should have instead established right away from grass roots the activities of these organizations. Politicizing the issue worsens it since every political party is doing so for its own interests.
Jubilee administration should understand that Kenya is a third world country; as such it is vulnerable to many problems. Thus, we still need these NGOs because had we not been needy, they would not been in our midst. Had it been that Kenya is developed, the decision would have been a plus, but at the moment it is inappropriate and unnecessary. Let the government imagine the fate of millions of malnourished children in these regions in the absentia of these NGOs.
Most importantly, the government, in liaison with all stakeholders should discuss their differences and if there are new regulations and guidelines, be briefed to these NGOs. No one wants to live in a society that is ever worried of what might happen thereafter due to insecurity. I fully support government’s efforts to tame terrorism for once, but the methods being used are so extreme.
