It is very sad to hear seasoned politicians promise the electorate county appointments in exchange of votes. It is a backward campaign tool that has no place in the modern day democracy.

On Sunday, Garissa County Governor Nathif Jama issued a controversial promise to the non-locals that he would reward them with key county appointments if they endorsed him for a second term.

Such statements could be interpreted as an undercover systems to cushion himself from criticisms of nonperformance. It is true that a leader should be elected or re-elected basing on his track record.

However, if a politician seeking re-election employs dubious methods as Jama did, it is more advisable that such leaders should be sent packing.

Similarly, such utterances can be tolerated especially in moments of desperation, when aspirants have realized that the electorate is likely to turn against them. For Jama's case, I think the statement will work against him given the fact that only one or two individuals will just be appointed for the said position if the dream will live to see the day.

But for the entire non-local populace, choosing a leader should be based on performance records and not on false promises.
