Deputy President William Ruto has of late been under strong criticism over his sentiments.
The man, who is second in command in the country has been accused of engaging in demeaning politics instead of unifying Kenyans.
The most notable recent statement was that made in Baringo in reference to a certain Luhya leader.
The DP was on record saying, “Mluhya mwingine kutoka hapa chini,” in reference to a certain Luhya leader purported to be Baringo Senator Gideon Moi’s political associate.
The sentiment has been criticised by Kenyans calling on the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) chair Francis Ole Kaparo to take action against the DP.
The Kenyan political scene has not changed at all.
The only change when elections are around the corner is in terms of political alliances’ formation. The rest is the same script that is always characterised by demeaning utterances.
The DP was playing politics in Baringo just as the other leaders do when in their political strongholds. It is very hypocritical to criticise the DP but give a blind eye to the other political leaders who have given demeaning utterances in one way or another.
The Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (Cord) brigade has been touring Western Kenya to stem rebellion in the coalition. In the rallies held in the stop overs in the region, the Luhya community was reminded that they would have been nowhere without Cord leader Raila Odinga.
All their success was attributed to Raila Odinga and if this is anything to go by, the Luhya people were lessened by utterances made in that line. Crucifying the DP on the utterances he made in Baringo holds no ground.
To change the political atmosphere completely, giving partial judgement should be stopped.
Kenyans should be wise enough to discern divisive sentiments from their leaders and should be strong enough to stop the leaders from giving incitement sentiments.
Kenyans are not clueless when it comes to Kenyan politics and they should know that the Deputy President William Ruto is playing politics that every political leader is doing.
