Speaking to this writer on Wednesday, some residents faulted the electoral body for harbouring vengeance against the opposition while others said it is clear Cord did not collect sufficient signatures.

"IEBC is a guns for hire by the government. They just want to frustrate the opposition because the opposition has been very critical of them. How did they arrive at the conclusion that some signatures were not valid," wondered Daniel Okoth.

His sentiments were echoed by Onesmus Murungi who averred that  IEBC was clearly out to settle scores with the opposition for always discrediting it and calling for its disbandment.

However Joe Mwangi was quick to defend the poll body saying they had followed the constitution in rejecting the signatures.

"If Cord submitted fake signatures then what else do you expect. The signatures did not meet the required threshold either. So Cord should just stop whining and blaming everyone," he said.

According to IEBC chairman Isaack Hassan, only 891,598 signatures out of the 1.6 million presented by the opposition in quest to force the referendum were valid.

Isaack added that as such, the proposal to amend the constitution had failed.
