Recently, students who joined the University of Eldoret were left stranded after they failed to land accommodation space at the institution.
The University was caught off-guard, with the students camping outside its premises demanding an explanation as to why they were admitted to the institution whereas there were no enough hostels to host them.
This is the crisis facing a majority of Universities in the country. As years go by, the intake to the higher institutions of learning also increases.
Some universities admit double the number of students they can accommodate.
The students who fail to get accommodation in the universities are forced to rent houses around the institution and are always charged exorbitantly by the landlords.
This forces parents to dig deeper into their pockets to ensure their children are safely sheltered. This trend needs to be brought to an end.
The government should work to ensure that universities get more funding to construct adequate hostels for university students.
Accommodation outside the institutions requires the students to be more vigilant in terms of security. Availability of basic needs such as water is usually a challenge outside universities.
The Ministry of Education should ensure that all public universities get the required accommodation space for all admitted students.
This will help reduce the cost being incurred by parents in seeking accommodation outside the universities.
