It is clear that most internet services are provided and Wi-Fi is a fundamental enabler.
Students are coming to understand that the Wi-Fi technology they already know and love is making their lives even better.
A great number of students doing PHT 112 (an online course) rely on Wi-Fi. Students also perform other activities such as online units’ registration, checking fee structure and balance, hostel booking, research on education, music and sports as well as accessing the e-library.
Last week on Friday, I visited the college campus library. I noticed that the turnout was very low. The reason is that there was no Wi-Fi.
Some students could walk in with their smart gadgets. When they realized that there was no Wi-Fi, they could just walk out or proceed to the newspaper section.
This shows how important Wi-Fi is to the students. To some, it is as important as a basic need. I was surprised when a group of third year students told me that their subsistence diet is food, sleep and Wi-Fi.
I even remember that the first agenda that Maseno University Students gave Michael Joseph, the Chancellor of this institution when resuming office last year, was unlimited Wi-Fi.
Therefore, it is unfortunate that the Wi-Fi is susceptible to interruption, poor connectivity and some areas aren’t reached. Parts of equator hostels, Makerere, new sunrise and vetfam among some other areas do not have Wi-Fi.
History of this institution has it that the Wi-Fi hotspots were launched in 2010 by then the Vice Chancellor Prof Fredrick Onyango. This was way back then during his farewell. In my view, he left a legacy. This legacy should be honored by improving the quality of Wi-Fi services in the institution.
I believe that Prof Dominic Makawiti is determined to do so. This can be evidenced through the cables that are being distributed in the institution. The ICT Director, Mr. George Ouma Omuono confirmed that they are meant to distribute Wi-Fi services to the student hostels.
However, I believe that most of the students using Wi-Fi hotspot are continuing. I think The University should consider them when installing the Wi-Fi cables to the hostels. It can do so by providing the services to those private hostels that the students rent outside there.
In conclusion, the relevant authorities should minimise the interruption of Wi-Fi connectivity. Article 47 of The Constitution of The Students’ Organisation of Maseno University 2011 is clear on the duties of Director of Academic Affairs. In conjunction with other students’ leaders, they should consider ensuring the Wi-Fi services are improved.
