During my days in primary school, I remember my teacher repeating time and again that the basic human needs were food, shelter and clothing.

Anything other than the three primary basic needs were categorised as wants, meaning they were not that vital for human’s survival on earth.

Believe me or not, times have changed and so have human needs. Nowadays, they say the basic needs have increased to four-the new one being sex.

It might be a taboo to write about it or worse still talk about sex but the reality remains it is a human act, as a matter of fact holy and ordained by God.

The only problem is when it is abused and made to look like a filthy and dirty act that brings out immorality in society. Sex has been taken too far and even associated with orgies and devil worshipping; some have turned it into twilight business, in the most shameful of ways.

Sex is meant to be enjoyed at one’s matrimonial home and bed - to be precise. This should be made known to children who today seem to be misguided by all kinds of media they come across. The big question is, whose responsibility is it to teach the children and especially teenagers about sexuality and sex?

Many will say and have it in their mind that it is a teacher’s responsibility to do this but this is where everything went wrong. Parents are busy chasing money for school fees, books and uniform and so when children go to school, teachers are their parents.

Let every parent and neighbour have it as a priority to openly talk to our children about sex, so that we can realise a drop in the now increasing cases of teens acquiring HIV/AIDS as a result of early, unprotected, careless sex as shown by research.

Charity begins at home, so parents should lead by the example teaching their children and creating awareness in them as teachers too on the other hand play their role to save the coming generation.
