They came in big numbers from the four corners of this Country. In all ages, shapes and complexions, they trooped into Eldoret town the city of champions.
They brought in a booming business for the housing and hotel industry but great panic to the family fabric.
The commercial sex workers have hit the road with the speed of light, cashing in on their intended business immediately on landing. They exhibit their well packaged and visibly displayed products from morning to evening in strategic points mainly along the Uganda Road, Kenyatta Avenue and Oginga Odinga street.
If you thought they only had decorations above their shoulders, think again, they indeed have brains and an enviable knowledge of economics. The twilight girls are quite aware that it is the harvest season in Uasin Gishu County and its environs.
They also have the knowledge that while enjoying the fruits of their hard earned wheat and maize proceeds, the farmers would need sexual services. They have come to supply them in plenty, but at a cost.
Joyline, not her real name is one of them. She has just alighted from a Coast bound bus.
Despite the long travel, she says she has to check into a comfortable room in a hotel, freshen up and unpack her wares ready for the business of the night.
“One thing I like with Eldoret is that men here are very generous.. They can even give you more money than you had asked for. And they are not rough. That is why I came back. I was treated well here last year," she said while darting her eyes all round as if looking for a prospective customer.
While the twilight girls have been warmly welcomed by the moneyed male farmers in town, their wives are up in arms against the sex workers, saying they dry their husband's pockets and bank accounts of their husbands.
Ruth Kiplamai is one of the women who have expressed their distaste at the presence of the prostitutes in town.
“My husband cheated me that he had used all the wheat proceeds to buy land. But when I insisted on having a look at the purchasing documents he turned violent and threatened to beat me up. I suspected that he must have lavishly spent the money on prostitutes in town," she said.
Ruth is among many bitter women who have fallen victims of the influx of twilight girls who have landed in Eldoret town. She participated in planting, weeding and harvesting of wheat and maize but her husband has selfishly squandered the entire amount on the sex workers.
The County government of Uasin Gishu launched a crack down on the streets, to arrest the women.
According to the County gvernment, the sex workers deprive families of the farmers their livelihood.
Prostitution is also likely to reverse the gains made in the fight against the HIV/Aids.
