Ken Obura Mirenga was one of the most promising young politicians in Kenya but now, the former Kisumu Central MP is facing uncertain political times after the 2017 election loss.
An ambitious but controversial politician, Obura honed his political skills at the University of Nairobi. He vied for the powerful Secretary General position but lost. However, to maintain his relevance in student politics, he formed became the official leader of the opposition of SONU.
During the 2007 general election, Obura was among the young politicians who campaigned for the ODM Presidential candidate Raila Odinga.
Five years later, in 2013, Obura officially announced his arrival into the national politics. He had to square off with veteran politicians for the ODM ticket to vie for the newly created Kisumu Central MP. He triumphed, beating former MP Ken Nyagudi. He would go on to win the seat with a huge margin. However, his troubles within the party started almost immediately.
In the run to the 2014 ODM elections, Obura declared interest for the powerful Secretary General position which was held by then Kisumu Senator Anyang' Nyong'o. His candidature however unsettled the waters within Raila's party and was prevailed upon to withdraw.
Together with other going turks including the then Ugenya MP David Ochieng', they accused the party's old guards of denying them opportunity to party leadership.
In the run to the 2017 election, Obura's relationship with ODM was damaged beyond repair. He attended Jubilee Party prayer rally in Nakuru, a move that angered the party. To many, his reelection was in jeopardy. He however wore a bold face saying that his development record will guarantee him reelection.
In January 2017 Obura came face to face with the reality on the ground as angry youth pelted his car with stones. He accused his rivals over the incident.
During the party nominations in April, Obura controversially won the ticket. His opponents cried foul and challenged the win. When the exercise was repeated, controversial Siaya MCA Fred Ouda clinched the ticket. Obura decamped and vied as an independent but lost in August 8.
As to whether he will make a comeback in future remains to be seen.
