A number of influential opposition leaders have this week made statements that show that NASA coalition as we know it is no more.

These statements were, however, expected as NASA principals, including Raila Odinga, had in the past hinted that they were ready to walk out of the opposition arrangement and plan for future elections alone.

ODM's new secretary general, lawyer Edwin Sifuna, said his party had been carrying Wiper Party, ANC and Ford Kenya in the NASA formation.

"Our party has been forced to whisper when it should shout and stay put when it should move,” Mr Sifuna said.

"We are tall. And when you are tall and your friend is short, they do not tell you to kneel so that you look the same height. They ask you to carry them,” he added.

ODM deputy party leader Wycliffe Oparanya said the outfit will look for other partners in the 2022 elections.

“Parties come together to ascend to power. We did not get to that. And now, when we get to 2022, we will look at other parties that were not with us in 2017, because we must look for an alliance to help us win," the Kakamega governor said, accusing the other parties in NASA of relying too much on ODM.

"Let us all fend for ourselves — each for his own. This thing of hanging on people’s backs and talking about 2022 endlessly must end,” he added.

Ford Kenya deputy leader Boni Khalwale, who has previously accused Raila of betraying the other principals, insists there was no swearing in of the ODM boss at Uhuru Park on January 30.

"There was no swearing-in, if there were, you would have seen a judge in accordance with the law, various protocols that accompany that function, people invited locally and internationally as guests and members of our families," he said.

The ex-lawmaker added: "It was something that occurred on the spur of the moment. It is a non-issue.”

A week ago, Raila had said ODM was ready to fight alone or look for other partners for the next elections.

“We must be prepared to fight alongside other like-minded parties and individual. But we must also be prepared to fight alone should it come to that,” he said.

The ODM leader is expected to disregard his pre-election agreement with other coalition partners, which bars him from running for president in future elections.
