The push for the secession of the Coast region after the rerun does not reflect the agenda of Mombasa Republican Council (MRC), Kilifi North MP Owen Baya has said.

A section of leaders from the region had said that they will advocate for secession if the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC ) declares President Uhuru Kenyatta and his  Deputy William Ruto emerge victorious in the Thursday rerun.

Baya also said that the council will not influence the tabling of the motion in any way.

Addressing the press at his office in Kilifi, Baya said that the residents of this part of the nation have been sidelined for many times, adding that time has come to liberate them from poverty.

“The Bill is not in way related to the MRC. Though the MRC had a similar call, they were not using the right channels. I don’t believe in violence. The Constitution gives me the power to lobby for the region to manage its own affairs,” Baya said, as quoted by The Star.

Leaders backing the election of Former Prime Minister  Raila Amolo Odinga have maintained that secession is among the best ways to deal with the current political temperatures.

The lawmaker said that the residents of the region have been marginalized by the past governments, adding that they cannot afford another term in the opposition.
