Renowned lawyer and Siaya Senator, James Orengo, has fired a warning at Deputy President William Ruto against engaging in activities that may turn President Uhuru Kenyatta into a lame-duck president.
Mr. Orengo encouraged the Deputy President to steer clear of politics and give the president the space to deliver on his mandate and to shape his legacy.
''The Deputy President William Ruto should be very careful not to make the president a lame-duck. When he becomes the centre of gravity then it will be very difficult for President Uhuru to deliver on the agenda for the Jubilee administration... Uhuru should be given the space to shape his legacy as he will not be on the ballot in 2022,'' Senator Orengo said.
Senator Orengo spoke yesterday on a prime time panel discussion on one of the mainstream television stations that featured former presidential contender Martha Karua and the current governor of Tharaka Nithi Muthomi Njuki.
His pointed criticism of the deputy president comes in the wake of newfound amity between President Uhuru Kenyatta and veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga.
Politicians allied to William Ruto have openly expressed fears that Raila's handshake was designed to deny Willam Ruto the presidency in 2022, allegations that Odinga himself has strongly refuted.
Orengo also denied that the dramatic handshake was about politics, saying that it was aimed at bringing the country together.
Orengo said that the greatest threat to the handshake was those in government hellbent on weaponising politics.
