Lawyer James Orengo has been sued by his ex-clerk for allegedly failing to pay him salaries for 17 months. The clerk, Jedidah Ogango, is seeking compensation worth Sh950, 000 for the period he worked at JAB Orengo Advocates.

Ogango said that senior counsel Orengo kept promising to pay him as he worked at JAB Orengo Advocates. The wait for almost two years has forced him to move to the Employment and Labour Relations Court to seek his right.

“But by looking at the change in the law firm, the harsh economic times have since passed and changed for the better, but he still refuses to pay me. I’m now led to believe they had been misleading me and as such my hopes and patience have been dashed — some to naught,” his affidavit reads in part.

According to the suit papers seen by the Star, Jedidah Ogango was employed in 2008 via an oral contract entitling him to a Sh20, 000 monthly salary. However, in September 2014 things changed and his salary started delaying. His wait turned into 17 months.

He says that his demand letter through Okoth Okwemba SM & Associate was denied because Orengo’s firm said Ogango quit his job without decency.
