Siaya Senator James Orengo maintains that former Langata MP and Prime Minister Raila Odinga helped the wrong man (Mwai Kibaki) to ascend to the presidency a move that made them differ politically in 2002.
The Senior Counsel highlights the famous 'Kibaki Tosha' declaration at Uhuru Park in October 2002.
According to Orengo, Raila endorsed a man who since independence had been fighting opposition forces.
Mr Orengo claims that Raila's political dreams were further pulled down by Kibaki "handing over power" to Uhuru Kenyatta in 2013.
At the time, Raila was the legislator for Langata, an area that included the current Kibra constituency.
Orengo says Raila chose a longer route in 2002, for first crashing KANU, the ruling party, then choosing to support Kibaki against Kanu's candidate Uhuru Kenyatta.
However, Raila explained that it was a wise decision to front a strong man from the Kikuyu community to split the votes and stop Kanu holding power.
“When Kibaki came along, it had become a disturbing trend for all manner of people pouring into the Opposition and crowding out the real owners of the struggle. It was painful for me that we had allowed our fruits of the struggle to be hijacked by those who had all along sat in the periphery,” says Orengo.
However, things did not work as planned and was Kibaki safely assumed office, he thrashed his Memorandum of Understanding with Raila that would have seen him appointed as Prime Minister. Kibaki even fired him from the Cabinet in 2005.
Mr Orengo says he vied for Presidency in 2002 on Social Democratic Party (SDP)ticket out of frustration and to make a protest statement.
“I wanted real leadership change when Moi’s term in office came to an end, and not just another game of musical chairs,” says Orengo.
