Siaya Senator James Orengo has defended the decision by NASA to sack Moses Wetangula as Senate Minority Leader, saying the move was long overdue.

But Orengo further said he would not hesitate to relinquish his new position should he be ordered so by NASA summit.

"It is the Parliamentary Group that has powers to elect a leader to that position. That is in the Standing Orders and I cannot contradict it," Orengo said in an interview on Tuesday.

Despite assurances from top NASA leadership, Senator Wetangula was successfully removed after the PG overwhelming voted in favour of Orengo.

For efficiency, Orengo argued, Wetangula would have either chosen to work at top NASA summit level or lead the senate, insisting he wouldn't have performed the two.

"Practically, it is impossible to serve at highest level of NASA summit and expect to lead troops in Senate. It is difficult o multitask," he said, without directly mentioning Wetangula.

NASA affiliates Wiper, Ford Kenya and ANC have since protested the move, accusing the ODM wing of shortchanging the MoU that created the coalition.

In the Senate, ODM has 20 members while Wetangula's Ford Kenya had only him as the representative.
