Speaking at his office on Tuesday, Orengo accused the CS of going against the spirit of the constitution and urged him to move slow on the matter.

"Matiang'i must know that such decisions don't find favour with the constitution. The days of making pronouncements in markets are gone," he said.

Orengo, who is also the Siaya Senator, said the Minister cannot institute the changes alone, adding it was the work of Inspector General of Police to organise the security of lawmakers.

"Matiang'i must know that the chain of command in the police operations has changed. It is the prerogative of the Police Service Commission to handle matters of security not his," the Senator insisted.

This comes after the Interior Ministry announced plans to withdraw up to 10,000 security personnel attached to VIPs to be redeployed to the general public.

"Government to reduce the levels of VIP protection by 50 per cent by July this year so that the officers can be deployed to protect life and property of ordinary citizens," Matiang'i said on Tuesday.
